Beijing Students Protest Lecturer’s Detention

(NTDTV)
In Beijing, about a hundred university students demanded the release of a lecturer, Ding Xiaoping, who has allegedly been detained. The students gathered outside of the district police bureau on Sunday (September 20) on their second day of protest.
Ding Xiaoping is a popular lecturer, known at universities across China. He was imprisoned for three years after his involvement in the Tiananmen pro-democracy demonstrations of 1989.
According to the Associated Press, the students believe authorities detained Ding Xiaoping because they perceive him as a threat—ahead of celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the communist takeover of China on October 1st.
One student, Yu Zhiwei, told the Associated Press that police beat about six of the protesters. No one was seriously injured.
By Monday some protesters said officials had persuaded them to sign statements, promising to stay quiet. So far Beijing police have not confirmed Mr. Ding’s detention.
