And a possible update on missing Chinese rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng—on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, said in a press conference that Gao had been sentenced for subversion.
Yang did not give details on Gao’s current condition or his whereabouts. It’s also not clear whether Yang was referring to a new conviction, or the suspended three-year sentence Gao received in 2006.
As a lawyer, Gao had defended prominent dissidents, and spoke out against the Chinese regime’s persecution of members of the Falun Gong spiritual group.
He was taken from his home by security forces in February 2009. He hasn’t been heard from since.
