Australian animal protection officers found this dog in a squalid backyard in Melbourne, sleeping on a piece of tattered cardboard. Eventually, they learned the dog, named Muffy, was last seen by her owners nine years ago, in a location almost 1,700km away. Muffy’s owner, Natalie Lampard, had given her up for dead.
[Natalie Lampard, Dog Owner]:
“Well, we left her with friends and we thought she just ran away and she just disappeared.”
A reunion will be possible next week with the help of an under-skin microchip on Muffy, which authorities used to trace her owners.
[Gail Coulter, Animal Care Worker]:
“She wasn’t in a good state when we found her but I can’t imagine she could possibly have walked that way on those tiny legs.”
Muffy is believed to have been in Melbourne for about a year, but her life over the previous eight years will be a shaggy dog’s tale worth knowing one day.
