Researchers in Beijing have found that seven women working in a Chinese factory suffered severe health problems after coming into contact with nanoparticles. The women had permanent lung damage and two of them later died.
A nanometer is a measurement for one one-billionth of a meter. And nanoparticles measure between one and a hundred nanometers wide. Particles this small are used in the manufacture of certain types of paint, tires and sporting goods.
According to Reuters, the nanoparticles found in the women’s lungs matched particles that health officials later found in the factory where they worked. Once nanoparticles penetrate lung cells, they are impossible to remove.
