A fire broke out in a forest in the western suburbs of Athens on Tuesday (July 28). The capital was covered in a thick layer of black smoke.
No homes were endangered but the fire came dangerously close to commercial warehouses in the area.
Police closed off a part of the Athens northern highway as a precaution, while at least 30 firefighters with a dozen vehicles and helicopters fought the blaze.
The high summer temperatures and strong winds have caused fires for the past few weeks throughout the country.
Greece is the victim of fires every year, some caused by arson. In 2007, at least 67 people died in scores of forest fires that spread through the Peloponnesus peninsula.
