Meanwhile, residents in parts of northwestern India might welcome some of the rain that’s hitting Mumbai. Surging temperatures are still making life miserable for people in India’s northwestern Amritsar city.
A scorching sun pushed thermometers in India’s Punjab state to over 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
The mercury level has been hovering between 41 and 45 degrees Celsius for the past month. Office-goers and business commuters are leaving their homes early and returning after dusk to avoid the baking sun.
[Manoj, Local Resident]:
“It is very hot these days. Especially people like us who have a travelling job face the brunt of the scorching heat. We have to tie a handkerchief on our face and have to stop our bike to handle calls from our boss. We do not get time to take precautions because of which our skin gets tanned.”
People are now seeking divine intervention in the form of rain to get some respite from the heat.
Many other parts of India have already received pre-monsoon showers.
[Rajiv, Tourist from Varanasi]:
“It is very hot in Amritsar. We have come from Varanasi to go to Jammu. We thought Varanasi was hotter but we were wrong. We arrived yesterday and are finding this heat just unbearable.”
Soaring summer temperatures in India lead to heat wave conditions that claim the lives of people and livestock.
