Nissan is taking a step towards its goal of leading the industry in the zero-emission field, introducing its much-awaited electric car. These cars will be hitting the US first and then Japan in the latter half of next year. Nissan’s Leaf will have a cruising range of 160 km (100 miles) and a top speed of over 140 km/hour (76 mph).
[Carlos Ghosn, CEO, Nissan Motors]:
“This car represents a real breakthrough. For the first time in our industry history a car manufacturer will mass-market a zero emission car with the ultimate solution for sustainable mobility.”
[Junichiro Koizumi, Former Japanese Prime Minster]:
“I think this car will be popular from the point of view of creating a society which is not dependent on fossi fuel. I hope that the people of Japan will contribute to this effort.”
Nissan has not yet announced the price for the five-seater Leaf, but Ghosn says it will be comparable to gasoline engine car.
Other automakers such as Toyota and Volkswagen have also announced plans to launch electric cars in the next several years. However, it may take some time due to the vehicle’s high cost, limited driving range and long charging times.
