Doctors in Spain said on Thursday [April 22] they had successfully performed the world’s first full-face transplant.
The operation was carried out in March on a man whose face had been disfigured during an accident.
He was considered for the procedure after nine previous surgeries had proved unsuccessful.
Doctors transplanted the entire facial skin, muscles, lips, teeth, and other facial features.
The patient was inspired by the first partial-face transplant performed on a woman in 2005.
The man told doctors he was satisfied with the results.
[Dr Joan Barret, Chief of Plastic Surgery, Vall D’Hebron Hospital]:
“The patient asked to see himself one week after the surgery, and reacted very calmly with satisfaction. When we asked him, in a written way – because we communicate with writing and gestures – he said he was very grateful and satisfied.”
Doctors emphasized that the patient’s face would look nothing like the donor’s – which they said was important for society to know.
