On June 19th a royal wedding will take place at the Big Church in Stockholm.
Crown princess Victoria will marry her fiancée, Daniel Westling, in a shining church.
The church is now closed to the public, as it undergoes a massive renovation.
[Ake Bonnier, Dean of the Church]:
“We are cleaning it in a special way and we are renovating and renewing things.”
Donations have arrived just in time to fund the project.
The cost? About two million U.S. dollars for a revamp that’s long overdue.
The arches, walls, the altar and benches will be brushed up, repainted, consolidated, and retouched.
The silver altars have oxidized over time, so the protective lacquer will be renewed.
[Ake Sanding, Project Manger]:
“You have to be very handy to pull this off. You can’t lie in on the tree area that is close to it. It’s about very small details; wad of cotton, tops, and solvent are what you need when you do the cleaning.”
It has been 50 years since the church was last renovated.
Between 10 and 25 professional craftsmen will be involved during the process.
The church will look stunning by the wedding day.
[Ake Bonnier, Dean of the Cathedral]:
“I’m looking forward to the very day when the church is crowded with people and everyone is happy and the wedding couple is here and we have this service. I’m happy for them and I’m happy for everyone.”
