U.S. Researchers Find Color Blindness Cure

Dalton, the squirrel monkey, was born color blind, just like millions of people around the world. Due to a cone cells disorder, Dalton’s world was cast in sepia tones and he couldn’t discern the colors green and red.
That is, until researchers Jay Neitz and William Hauswirth came up with a solution. Using gene therapy, the Seattle researchers applied corrective genes to Dalton’s retinas. This technique helped produce a protein that makes pigments sensitive to the colors red and green.
Now, a year and a half later, Dalton is able to discern 16 hues of red and green.
Neitz and Hauswirth hope this new technology will be useful in correcting many types of vision disorders in humans.
