In Washington, DC on Tuesday, U.S. lawmakers honored the Dalai Lama with a human rights award.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi presented him with the Lantos Human Rights Prize. It’s named after the late Congressman Tom Lantos, who was a human rights advocate and Holocaust survivor.
The award comes as President Barack Obama is receiving a wave of criticism for delaying a meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. This will be the first time a U.S. president has not met with the Dalai Lama since he first visited Washington in 1991. Obama decided to postpone his meeting with the Dalai Lama until after Obama’s scheduled meeting with Chinese leader Hu Jintao in November
