The leaders of Zimbabwe announced on Wednesday (July 1) that they had secured a $950 million line of credit from China.
The US and Europe have been hesitant to give direct aid to Zimbabwe’s government until the country improves its human rights situation. In the past, aid from the West has generally been dispensed through charities and NGOs.
On the other hand, China is giving its loan directly to Zimbabwe’s government. According to the New York Times, sources inside Zimbabwe’s government say the money comes with some strings attached, including provisions that some of it be used to purchase Chinese goods.
The Chinese regime has given loans and aid to various African countries in recent years, including Sudan, that have been criticized by the West for abuses against their own people.
