MUNICH, GERMANY - OCTOBER 7: Two young women carry a bag full of returnable bottles to a store for refund October 7, 2003 in Munich, Germany. New German laws that went into full effect October 1, 2003 require large grocery stores to accept all returnable bottles and soft-drink cans for refund that are similarly-shaped to those bottles and cans the stores sell. Grocery chains and related interest groups decry the measures, and in order to circumvent the new law many chains are offering soft drinks in their own, uniquely-shaped bottles, and have banned soft drinks in cans altogether. Consumer groups are potesting against the complexity of the new law, while European Union officials are concerned that the new law impedes fair competition for imported soft drink brands.
